Affirmation apps put short, positive statements in front of you every day: as reminders, widgets, read-aloud sessions or recordings in your own voice. Maria installed and used each of the reviewed apps: she wrote her own affirmations, tried the sessions, reminders and widgets, and checked what the free plan really includes. We make I am + and Vision Board ++, so both are scored with the same rubric as every other app.
Prices, ratings and platforms come from each app’s US App Store listing, checked on 22 October 2026; rating counts are summed across all 175 App Store storefronts. Prices change — check the store before you subscribe.
What to look for in an affirmation app
Six checks separate an app you keep using from one you forget after a week:
- Free plan and ads. Can you write and practise your own affirmations for free, without ads?
- Your own words. Can you add your own affirmations and sort them into collections?
- Audio. Are there sessions with voices and music, or can you record your own voice?
- Daily reminders. Do reminders and home-screen or lock-screen widgets keep an affirmation in view?
- AI affirmations. Can the app write affirmations for your own situation?
- Focus. Do you want affirmations only, or a journal or vision board next to them?

How we choose the best affirmation apps
We compared 7 iOS affirmation apps on the same criteria: price and ads, ease of use, the affirmation library, your own and AI affirmations, sessions and audio, reminders and widgets, extras such as a journal or vision board, and platforms. Maria’s hands-on use of each app (see the introduction) is complemented by public App Store data.
Ratings-count methodology
Rating counts (for example 9,603 for Vision Board ++) are the sum of App Store ratings across all 175 App Store storefronts, pulled on 22 October 2026, using the same method for every app. Star ratings are the US App Store averages. I am + is the newest app here and rests on 101 ratings (26 in the US), so its average can still move.
Prices, trials and platforms
Prices are the in-app purchases listed on each app’s US App Store page. Free-trial lengths are shown inside the apps, not on the store, so they come from our tests and can change. An app counts as available on Android when we found its Google Play listing.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best free affirmation app?
I am + is the best free affirmation app we tested: the free version has no ads and covers the basics, including your own affirmations, collections, reminders, widgets and AI affirmations, and you can practise them in sessions with voices and music. A $4-a-year plan adds more AI topics, more voices and your own music. Among the other apps, Self Love and Mantra have usable free versions limited to general topics, and I am is free with a lot of ads. We make I am +, so every app is scored against the same public App Store data and the same criteria.
What is the best free affirmation app for iPad?
I am + runs natively on iPad and its free version is ad-free, so it is our pick for iPad as well. All seven apps in this review run on iPad; Vision Board ++ is the choice if you also want a vision board on the larger screen, and Gratitude if you prefer journaling.
Which affirmation apps let you record your own voice?
Mantra, Vision Board ++ and Gratitude let you record affirmations in your own voice and play them back. I am + and I am read affirmations aloud with built-in voices instead, and Self Love has you say them out loud in Mirror Mode.
Which affirmation apps have home-screen widgets?
Six of the seven apps have home-screen widgets: I am +, I am, Mantra, Self Love, Vision Board ++ and Motivation. I am + and Self Love also offer lock-screen widgets, and I am and Self Love have Apple Watch apps. Gratitude does not list a widget.
Do affirmation apps actually work?
Affirmations can help, but they are not magic. Studies on self-affirmation, where you reflect on values that matter to you, show lower stress and more openness to change (Cohen & Sherman, 2014) and activity in brain regions linked to self-related processing and reward (Cascio et al., 2016). Repeating overly positive statements can backfire for people with low self-esteem (Wood, Perunovic & Lee, 2009). Affirmations that are specific and believable, practised daily and tied to action work best, and an app helps mainly by keeping them in front of you.
